Shipyard Confined Space (English)

Work in confined and enclosed spaces have a greater likelihood of causing fatalities, severe injuries and illness than any other type of shipboard work.

Typical hazards associated with confined spaces are:

• Serious risk of fire or explosion
• Loss of consciousness from asphyxiation arising from gas, fumes, vapor or lack  of oxygen
• Drowning arising from increased water level
• Loss of consciousness arising from an increase in body temperature
• Asphyxiation/suffocation arising from free flowing solid (engulfment) or the  inability to reach a breathable atmosphere due to entrapment

 

Course Purpose:
At the completion of this workshop it is expected that all trainees will be able to better identify, evaluate and control hazards associated with confined and enclosed spaces.

 

Specific Objectives:
At the completion of this lesson, It is expected that all trainees will:

• Understand Terminology Used Regarding Confined Spaces
• Pass the Quiz at the End of This Lesson

They will also have the ability to follow the OSHA requirements and yard procedures regarding:

• Entering a Confined Space
• Performing “Cold Work” in a Confined Space
• Performing “Hot Work” in a Confined Space
